This year, personal debt rose to the point of national crisis in the US. News reports of all-time high rates of home loan defaults and foreclosures only hint at the real story - many families live under financial uncertainty, with no clear way to financial stability. The advantage always seems to go to the company - the credit card company, the bank... never the family.

First, some free simple rules of personal finances that I learned the hard way.
Rule #1. Finances are NOT an emotional issue.
The biggest problem that people face when considering personal finances is the confusing effect that emotions have on how they think about money.
I know the feeling... it seems impossible. Where will the money come from to pay the bills? What happened to the time when I could do those extra things for my family? What about bills that come in that I forgot were coming? Will we make it to the end of the month? Gripping fear paralyzes decision-making...
Believe me, unless you separate out your motivation for wanting to become fiscally responsible from the act of making financial decisions, you will not be able to see clearly which decisions are optimal. We often feel entitled to spend a little extra here and there on ourselves because we 'deserve' it... we work hard, the boss is tough, the kids are driving us up the walls, we need a break. We end up literally stealing from ourselves, our family... guilt that we won't allow ourselves to admit because it hurts too much.
To truly demonstrate to yourself and your loved ones that you understand Rule #1, agree to the following:
#1.1 One person in the household must make the final large decision(s) on paying down debt. Their decision(s) should be made with input from others, and they should keep others updated and informed on their decisions and actions. In the end, however, everyone must agree who makes that decision.
#1.2 Once that decision has been made, the person who makes those decisions must also act on those decision (e.g., make payments against debt) and must not rely on others to make the payments.
#1.3 NEVER - I repeat - NEVER - discuss finances in an emotionally charged setting. Plan 1-2 times a week to discuss progress on the project. If it becomes emotional, stop the discussions, if possible, and try again later.
This method is not a marriage counseling method. At times couples develop problems in their relationship, and money becomes a substitute for the real issues. Having less debt and more money may decrease negative stress, but it will rarely fix underlying problems with relationships.
When you learn the entire method, you will come to see how harmful it is to make such decisions on the fly, with proper planning. You'll also learn how that you can be good to yourself and your family and make the go-ahead decision to spend a little here and there, if you understand Rule #2.
Rule #2. "Budget" is a verb, as well as a noun.
Many people think that using a budget is restricting. It's not! It's actually empowering. They make that mistake because they think of it as a set of rules that must be followed, to the letter, down to the dime. Not so! A healthy approach to stable personal finances uses a dynamic budget - one that changes. When you get discouraged, or angry about the work that you have to put into "The Budget", remember that "To budget" is ALSO a verb - and your decisions and actions about your finances are all activities that fall under 'budgeting'. When asked about an expense, I often say to my family "Yes, we can do that. But we'll have to budget for it". When we're in debt, the decisions and actions we make today influence our budget now - and our debt level in the future. Use this opportunity to learn how To Budget.
In learning this simple method, you will learn how your future finances can be used to alleviate financial pressure in the present in a simple, yet profound manner that makes hard decisions easier.
